How To Help Your Loved One Transition To Assisted Living

Helping your loved one move into an assisted living facility is a life-changing event. The decision involves many factors. These include ensuring that their physical and emotional needs are met. You can ease this tremendous event by initiating a dialogue early on. Assessing the best fit for a new home and getting them adjusted to their new space are also ways to ease the pressure. Whatever you do, be sure to infuse a loving and supportive tone into your words and gestures.

Start a conversation about the move long before the actual transition happens. Ideally, start the conversation long before you discover signs that your loved one is not able to care for themselves. This way, there is less pressure on the situation while you are helping them make their move. When you begin your conversation, it is important to be respectful. Avoid any role-reversal and be sure to let them know why you want to talk: because you love them.

When you've started the dialogue, you can now talk with them about what would make their living center a good fit. Be sure to ask about key features they would like to see in their new home. What amenities and services would they like to see in their new home? Topics of your conversation should include: issues with their current living space, whether they need assistance getting around, health issues, and finances. Once you've found a perfect fit for their needs, it is time to make the move.

To assist them in their new space, it is important to help them settle into their new life. Let them know that you support them by being actively involved in their transition. One of the ways you can do this is by going to see them often. You can also encourage them to take part in the activities around the facility. People with dementia feel more fulfilled when they make contribution to their environment. This could be anything from playing the piano to helping others.
